A flavorful and spicy Indonesian beef dish, Spicy Beef Rendang is slow-cooked to perfection, resulting in tender meat and a rich, aromatic sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 can (13.5 ounces) coconut milk
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 23 red chilies, chopped (adjust for spice preference)
  • 1 tablespoon ground coriander
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic, ginger, and chopped chilies. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground coriander, ground cumin, and turmeric powder to the pot. Stir well to combine and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Add the beef cubes to the pot, stirring to coat them with the spice mixture. Cook for about 5 minutes until the beef is browned on all sides.
  5. Pour in the coconut milk and beef broth. Add the brown sugar and lime juice, then season with salt to taste. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  6. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally, until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened.
  7. Once cooked, taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of tamarind paste during cooking.
  • If you prefer a milder dish, reduce the number of chilies or use bell peppers instead.
